Air conditioner and refridgerators gobble up more then 50% of a household's electricity. Pick appliances with more ticks on their energy labels - they my cost a little more at first, but you save a lot more in the long run. A 4-tck refridgerator saves you about $100* worth of electricity per year compared to a 1-tick model, a 4-tick air conditioner saves you about $350* over a 1-tick model.
